How to create an AI chatbot for WhatsApp

· 7 min read

What every WhatsApp chatbot needs

Whichever way you choose, the pieces are the same:

  • A Meta business portfolio and a WhatsApp Business Account
  • A phone number connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform
  • Somewhere to receive messages (a webhook) and send replies
  • An AI model, plus your business information for it to answer from
  • A way for people on your team to see chats and take over

Option 1: Build it yourself

This suits teams with a developer who want full control. The rough steps:

  • Create an app in Meta's developer dashboard and add the WhatsApp product
  • Add and verify your phone number, and create a permanent access token
  • Build a web service with a webhook that receives messages from Meta
  • Send each message, with your business information, to an AI model and post the reply back through the Cloud API
  • Store conversations, handle media such as voice notes, and build an inbox for your team
  • Keep it running: security, errors, Meta's rules and API version changes

Option 2: Use a no-code platform

A platform has already built the webhook, the AI, the inbox and the WhatsApp connection. You bring your information and your number. For most small businesses this is faster and cheaper than paying for development and maintenance.

When comparing platforms, check that they use the official WhatsApp Business Platform, never invent answers, hand chats to a person, and support your customers' languages.

Getting the answers right

The AI is only as good as the information you give it. Start with your services and prices, opening hours, location and policies, and the questions customers ask most. Tell the chatbot to say when it doesn't know instead of guessing.

Test it the way customers talk: short messages, spelling mistakes, voice notes and mixed languages.

Rules to follow on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has rules that protect customers, and breaking them can get a number restricted:

  • Use the official platform, not tools that automate the regular WhatsApp app
  • Reply freely within 24 hours of a customer's last message; outside that window, use approved templates
  • Only send offers to customers who agreed to receive them, and let them opt out easily

Creating one with ChatFlow

With ChatFlow you create an account, add your business details, services and FAQs (or import a PDF, Word file or web page), choose what the assistant does, such as answering questions, booking or taking orders, connect your WhatsApp number and publish. There's a free plan, and a test mode to try the chatbot before going live.

Common questions

Can I make a WhatsApp chatbot for free?

You can start free on some platforms, including ChatFlow's free plan. Meta may still charge for certain messages you send first, such as reminders or offers.

Which AI model should I use?

If you build it yourself, choose a model that handles your customers' languages well and test it with real messages. Platforms choose and tune the model for you.

Do I need a new phone number?

Not necessarily. You can often use your existing business number, but depending on your region it may need to move from the WhatsApp app to the platform.
